Learning Disabilities Treatment Options

School Consultation

If your child has a learning disability, the primary place for help is his or her school. Some parents find themselves in conflict with school staff.  Other parents are uncertain. They aren’t sure their child is getting the best help possible at school. Working with the school can be complicated, confusing, and frustrating.

We can help. Our neuropsychologists can join you in working together with your school team. We will work with you to put in place teaching methods and specialized instructional programs that meet your child’s specific needs and propel your child’s learning ahead. Over the years, your child’s educational needs change. We will stay with you to make sure that school services change too. Getting school services right is an important form of learning disabilities treatment.

Family Therapy

The learning disability itself is bad enough. But learning problems often lead to emotional struggles and family conflicts that just make matters worse. Kids get demoralized, frustrated, anxious. They may resist doing what they need to do to improve. They may just give up. Parents can easily fall into the role of learning or homework “cop”. They can find themselves battling with their child all the time.

Family therapy can help your family cope with these emotional effects of a learning disability. We can help you learn how to stop the struggles and provide positive support to your child’s efforts to improve. Your child can learn better ways to cope with his or her frustrations. When he or she stops fighting and concentrates on learning, you will see the growth. Family therapy is a form of learning disabilities treatment

Cogmed

One of the most important building blocks of learning is your working memory capacity. Working memory is your ability to hold information in your mind for a brief period of time in order to work with or use that information. This process is essential for all learning. Basic neuroscience research can now be applied to improve your working memory through intensive computerized practice and training at home. It’s called Cogmed Working Memory Training.

Cogmed Working Memory Training is a research-supported way to improve learning by strengthening working memory. With this online brain training program, there are a series of engaging working memory games and challenges. The challenges, like most popular videogames, get progressively harder as your skills improve. This scientifically designed working memory exercise and practice, like physical exercise, leads to improved skill and capacity.

Solid research has shown that this form of training improves working memory and accelerates learning. 80% of users show measureable improvement in working memory and attention. Studies also show improvements in problem solving, reading comprehension, and learning. Cogmed is a proven learning disabilities treatment.

The program has been designed for use with all ages, from preschool to seniors. It is done in the home, with 30 to 45 minute sessions 3-4 times a week for 25 training sessions in total. Learn more.

HRV Biofeedback

Heart rate variability biofeedback can help your child deal more productively with the emotional challenges of a learning disability. HRV biofeedback provides an easy and very concrete way to see how bothered you are and to see what strategies help you to reduce arousal and get calm again. A simple sensor on your ear or finger picks up your heart beat. The computer analyzes the interval between heart beats, which has been found to be a good indicator of stress. During HRV biofeedback sessions we will help you learn to relax your muscles and your mind, reduce negative or anxious thought patterns, and learn to slow and regulate your breathing. Once you learn the techniques in sessions in our office, you can also use inexpensive software at home to build your ability to recognize when you are bothered and rapidly regain your calm.

Neurofeedback

Early research and our experience show that neurofeedback can be helpful in improving specific learning problems and in decreasing anxiety and improving frustration tolerance and mood in children with learning disabilities. Learn more.
